Tom Carleton headed up his first 48 hour film group with Jeff Dougherty as his DoP and a last minute crew. You are given a random genre, a line of dialog, a character name, a prop, and 48 hours to script, cast, shoot and edit your film. It’s a lot in very little time but us production geeks think it’s fun. Tom won the award of Best Directing beating out over 40+ other groups that participated. They also won Best Suspense/Thriller Genre and Best Graphics.

Patient 239

Directed by Ryan Betzler, this short 48 hour film marks the third year in a row that Ryan and Scott have teamed up for the 48 Hour Film Project. DoP Scott Dodoro decided to follow the latest fad in shooting with DSLR cameras and shot on the Canon 7D. With a small crew and the actors committed from Craigslist ads they shot at Garden City Hospital for about six hours. Then it was off to Sean Emery’s house for the kitchen scene. The Canon DSLR workflow consists of matching up your HD footage with audio recorded separately on a Zoom4 recorder. To help figure out this mess, Tom Lietz headed up the post process and kept the team going. They won Best in genre for Sci-Fi and Best Special Effects.

Why

Why – Garden City Hospital from Mindfield on Vimeo.

watch video|watch video|watch video
Mindfield was called by Jim Jagger and Occham Razor to shoot and edit a 60 second spot for Garden City Hospital. Written and Directed by Tom Carleton we pushed forward for a quick turnaround and a low budget one day shoot. Using a mix of talent and hospital employees Tom crafted a story to educate the viewer on some of the things available at Garden City Hospital. DP John Anderson Beavers used a Sony EX3 adapted to Canon Cine Style glass and used a Canon 7D as a second camera for tight quarters. Gaffer Darry Dusbiber added efficiency and skill with his pro team Mark Strachan and Dennis Rottell. There was a lot to do in just one day, some of which didn’t make the final cut.

Writer and Director Tom Carleton crafted a story for TV to promote the newest exhibition at the Detroit Institute of Arts.
“This exhibition explores the artistic consequences of the variations and dynamics of cultural exchanges between Africans and Europeans over 500 years, making it the broadest analytical overview on the subject to date. Through African Eyes will illustrate how African artists from diverse cultures have used and continue to use visual forms to reflect their particular societies’ changing attitudes toward Europeans, as the latter evolved from stranger to colonizer to the more inclusive Westerner.” – dia.org

Mindfield was chosen to create a motion graphics piece for the 2011 Toyota Avalon. The theme was “travel class”, harkening back to the 1950′s advertising era. George P. Johnson advertising agency wanted a current day take on the look and feel of a Saul Bass title sequence. A fun and exciting project for sure. +Read More…

Following up on the successful Transit Connect project Team Detroit called Mindfield and Director Tom Carleton in on their next production challenge. The innovative system, Sync, from Ford needed an easy way for owners and potential buyers alike to learn to use the system. Sync is an in-car connectivity system that allows you to operate most popular MP3 players, Bluetooth devices and USB drives with simple voice commands. Mindfield was tasked with shooting the 11 different tutorials in just three days. The project included shooting a day of process trailer in Downtown Detroit and confined the talent, Paula Miranda from LA, to 3 days inside the vehicle on Detroit’s hottest days of the summer. +Read More…
